Jets and Plumes
This is a useful summary which gives the basic information required to calculate the dilutions, velocity and other parameters related to plumes and jets.
Important Concepts
Zone of flow establishment (ZFE)
Gaussian profile doesn't develop instantly. The length at which ZFE occurs is 4bo (where bo = 2-D jet slot width)
- In the region of ZFE, volume of jet increases by sqrt(2) due to entrainment.
lQ -
Distance in which the amount of entrained volume matched the initial discharge Q
lM
Distance in which the amount of momentum gained matches the momentum introduced by inflow

Dilution on a horizontal aligned discharge
-> The horizontal aligned jet will have more dilution than the vertically aligned jet. IN the horizontally aligned jet, first of all the dilution would be upto 2.5 lM. Then after the distance 2.5 lm , we need to calculate the distance upto which the plume will reach.
